It was not pretty, but Chelan was able to knock off the Okanogan Bulldogs by one point on Thursday night in its first District Playoff game of the post season. The game came down to the final 9.4 seconds when Michael Amsel, Jr. drove the basket and was fouled, putting him on the line with Chelan down by one point.
Amsel was able to plunk in both of his free throws and put Chelan on top by one point, 42-41. Okanogan had 9 seconds to come up with a play to win back those two points, but Chelan’s defense, while aggressive, held off the Bulldogs without a foul.
If there is a team in the Caribou Trail League that has played Chelan tough in two league games, it has been Okanogan. And they played them tough in the Community Gymnasium Thursday.
Okanogan burst out to a 6-0 lead to get the game started in the first quarter, but Chelan was able to eliminate that deficit and go ahead at the end of the first quarter 12-9. In the second quarter, Chelan was able to keep the slight lead and end the half ahead 23-21.
After the break, Okanogan came back and outscored Chelan 11-6 to take the lead and entered the fourth quarter of play with the scored at 32-28. Aaron McQuaid ended up with his fifth foul in towards the end of the third quarter when he was called for a charge. Up to that point Aaron had not had a good game, scoring only 6 points. He was much more effective rebounding, pulling down 10 before fouling out.
Bronson Louie came off the bench and worked hard in this game, and while he only scored 3 points, pulled down 2 rebounds and had 1 steal, Louie was a disruptive force for Chelan on defense.
Michael Amsel, Jr. had 15 points on the evening with his final two coming from the free-throw line to win the game. Amsel also pulled down 6 rebounds, had 4 assists, 1 block and 3 steals.
Under the basket, Tyler James was effective once again, scoring 15 and pulling down 7 rebounds.
Over the years, Chelan basketball fans have seen crucial games like this one against Okanogan come right down to the wire, but Chelan always seems to find a way to win.
Cashmere beat Cascade 52-41 to win the right to play Chelan in the District Championship on Saturday night, February 12, at Cashmere High School.
