Tonasket topples Chelan in CTL wrestling action

“We didn’t show up with our ‘A’ team tonight,” said a disappointed Coach Jay McGuffin after the Chelan Goat Wrestling team lost to the Tonasket Tigers 18-39 on Saturday night in front of a home team. It was also senior night.
“I didn’t think we matched up well. If you look at the match, we didn’t.” Cashmere wrestled Tonasket really tough and Chelan beat Cashmere, so McGuffin said the coaches would have to go back to work on the wrestlers and pound it into their heads that you don’t finish matches on your knees.
Tonasket came to the mat with seven wrestlers ranked in the state compared to Chelan’s five ranked wrestlers.
Chelan had two forfeits; Zaren Sandum (140 lbs.) and Cole Schwartz (189 lbs.). “They had a 189 guy, but they didn’t want him to wrestle Cole,” said McGuffin. Schwartz is ranked No. 1 in the state.
The only other points garnered by Chelan on Friday came from two very tough matches. At 135 pounds, Zach Burchett came out and wrestled hard through three rounds and finally defeated Marcelino Ruiz by an 8-7 decision. These two wrestlers were trading reversals like they were free. Zack finally went ahead in the third round getting a two-point near fall over Ruiz.
Chelan’s only other win on the evening came from Alex Cortez (215 lbs.) when he won a 3-1 decision in overtime against Josh Lofthus who is ranked 9th. Alex is ranked 7th. Both wrestlers battled to a 1-1 tie at the end of the third round without getting a takedown points. Alex finally scored in overtime with a takedown which ended the match.
Jorge Villasenor (160 lbs.) lost a 5-2 decision to 7th ranked Tonasket senior Dustin Silverthorn. Alby Paz (171 lbs.) who is ranked 10th in the state went up against Tonasket senior Keegan McCormick who is ranked 4th in state and lost that decision 12-6. Paz had no trouble escaping from McCormick, but was unable to score any back points against this tough senior.
In the heavyweight class, Jose Aparicio (ranked 8th) went up against Tonasket senior Brandon Hudson who is ranked 5th and lost by fall in the first round.
In the lower weight classes, freshman Matt Barnes had a great match into the second round, trailing by one point 7-8 when he was pinned by Tonasket’s junior Jared Stedtfeld. At 119 pounds, freshman Justin Buyas lost by an 8-1 decision to senior Ryker Marchand.
Julio Vera (125 lbs.) lost his match by a 16-3 decision to senior Enrique Ortega. Chris Truini (125 lbs.) also lost his match to Jeff Stedtfeld by a10-1 decision.
Fourth ranked Billie Poppie (152 lbs.) had a tough match against 6th ranked Austin Booker and lost a frustrating 8-3 decision. “He’s already beat this kid once,” said McGuffin.
Tonasket, Cashmere and Chelan will be the CTL teams vying for those regional and state berths in several weeks.
