Individually it was a good night for Chelan

“The kids wrestled tough,” stated Coach Jay McGuffin after Chelan’s team loss to perennial tough guys, Warden, by a score of 44-24. “The all met my expectations tonight.”
Warden always brings a tough crew to Chelan, “I knew it would be a tough night,” said McGuffin. “We’ve already seen them twice this year. When you have more girls wrestling than you have on your girls basketball team, you know they’re tough.”
On the varsity side, Eric Shannon at 125 pounds surprised everyone with a pin over Saul Hinjosa. Shannon was down 0-7 with two near-falls when Hinjosa made a huge mistake and found himself on his back and pinned in short order. The entire team went crazy. “He was a great motivator tonight,” said McGuffin.
At 160 pounds, Jorge Villansenor had a great battle on the mat against Warden’s Kenny Sullivan, finally taking a 6-1 decision. Alby Paz faced off against Cruz Pinneda in the 171 pound battle and worked through a great match to win a 10-4 decision for Chelan
Cole Schwartz (189 lbs.) looked really good after the first round deficit of 2-3, coming back to win a satisfying 10-4 decision, almost getting a fall in the latter moments of the third round. Schwartz didn’t wrestle last year because of a football injury. It is good to see him back on the mat and helping lead the team.
At 215 pounds, Alex Cortez probably had the toughest win of the night. By the end of the second round, he was behind in points 3-4, but tied it at 4-4 early in the third escaping from the down position and picking up the tying point. Alex then went ahead 6-4 on a takedown, but with only four seconds remaining in the match, his opponent Gerino Luna was able to tie it up at 4-all.
This put the match into overtime and at the end of the first overtime period, the two wrestlers were tied at 6-all forcing a second OT period. Alex got two takedown points and a two point near fall in the 30 second period to win it 10-6.
Matt Barnes at 112 pounds had an exhibition match against Jesus Dominguig (103 lbs.) and easily won by pin.
In other action, the wrestlers losing their matches all battled hard on the mat which is the one thing Coach McGuffin requires of his team. “They all wrestled hard tonight and I was pleased with that,” said McGuffin.
Zaren Sandum lost by pin; Billie Poppie lost a 20-10 decision; Jose Aparicio lost by pin; Justin Buyas lost 8-0; and Loren Stocker lost by pin.
On the JV side Jonathon Santos (160 lbs) had two matches; one at the beginning of the match and one at the end. He won both of them. The first match was won with a 9-0 decision and his last match was a 15-5 decision.
Bobby Anderson (171 lbs) won his JV match with a 9-0 decision and Asa Schwartz won his JV match with a 6-1 decision. Going down in defeat by fall was Ezequel Leyva.
“I was happy with all of the wrestlers tonight,” said Coach McGuffin.
