There are only four teams left out of the 65 1A football teams in the state in the hunt for this year’s WIAA 1A Football Championship; Chelan, Connell, Cascade Christian and Montesano.

Cascade Christian, last year’s State Champions, have knocked Montesano out of the playoffs for two years running and Connell has done the same to Chelan.

Coming off the exciting quarterfinal win against Royal, Coach Darren Talley is excited about the upcoming game against Connell. “They are a great team, but so are we,” said Talley. “This should be a great semifinal game.”

“We are going into this game with no fear and no regrets,” said Talley. Connell still has the best running back in 1A football and if Chelan can handle Hadley, the chances are good that they will ascend to the State Championship game on December 3 in the Tacoma Dome.

As many Chelan football fans know, Chelan has gelled into an incredible team and it is the team work that has brought them back into the playoffs. Coach Talley firmly believes that it is the defensive work that has kept them winning.

Chelan’s front line is relentless in its hunt for the ball. Cole Schwartz in the linebacker position continues to get 12 or more tackles per game. His brother Asa Schwartz, Tyler Hood and Matt Robinson each added five tackles to the win over Royal.

In the first half of play against Royal, the Knights killed our defense with short little passes in the middle. They gained 286 yards in that first half, but in the second half, Chelan adjusted and held them to only 76 yards and no touchdowns.

Chelan’s offense seems to take care of itself with MichaelAmsel Jr. in the lead as quarterback. He, of course is backed up by some incredible runners like fullback Cole Schwartz and halfback Matt Peterson. Receivers Matt Robinson and Erik Oscarson are always a threat to any team trying to defend against the pass.

Connell will be seeing a more cohesive team than they did last year.

Game time is 12 noon in Moses Lake on Saturday, November 26.
