Lady Goats take 7th place at State Volleyball Tournament

It doesn’t seem fair, but if you lose your first match at the WIAA State Volleyball Tournament, you can only battle your way back to a 7th or 8th place finish. Chelan did just that after losing its first match to Kings who eventually ended up in third place after losing to Colville, the new State champion in the semi final matches in five games.

Having covered state volleyball for years, I know how hard it is to come back from a first round defeat, but the Chelan girls came into their match against a very strong Kalama team and battled through five games to continue play. “As we regrouped in the locker room after the loss to Kings, the girls focused on what they could still accomplish which was a trophy for 7th place and a chance to claim only 1 loss for the entire tournament,” said Coach Donene Hendricks.

Chelan followed the win over Kalama against Montesano on Saturday morning and then took on Ridgefild which they beat in three games for 7th place, 25-17, 25-17, 25-19 to bring home seventh place metal.

“Our overall record for the season 17-3... something we are very proud of,” said Hendricks.

“Although we didn't get to repeat this year as State Champions I can honestly say that these girls are Champions through and through.  Every day they worked tirelessly and unselfishly to help make our team the best that it could be. Our journey together as a team will forever be remembered and cherished for a lifetime.  I am truly blessed to have had the opportunity to coach such an amazing group.”

Chelan loses seven seniors this year, but the word on the street is that the JV team, who lost very few games itself, will end up every bit as good as this year’s varsity, next season. If Hendricks decides to continue coaching, she will just be reloading from an excellent volleyball program.

GoLakeChelan extends its heartfelt congratulations to a fine group of young ladies. They represented Chelan in the finest manner that is possible.
