Lady Goats have tough night against Cashmere

By Richard Uhlhorn

It was not a very pretty game and the Cashmere Lady Bulldogs came to the Community Gymnasium to play solid basketball. The Lady Goats did not play up to their potential, but the team was able to stay in the game throughout the first half and into the third quarter.

With 5:42 remaining to play in the third quarter, Chelan actually went ahead 26-24, but that lead was short lived. Cashmere tied the game up and then went on an 11 point scoring spree to put the game solidly into their hands with 1:37 remaining to play in the third quarter. By the end of this quarter, the Bulldogs led Chelan 43-29.

The fourth quarter was not much prettier with Cashmere outscoring Chelan 17 to 12 for a final score of 60-41. Gabby Gonzalez had a game high 15 points with two other Bulldogs also in double figures.

Chelan’s led scorer was Abby Phelps who pumped in 8 points followed by Courtney Dietrich and Cari Williams with 7 points each. Danielle Smythe was strong on the offensive end of the court pulling down 4 rebounds and scoring 6 points.

“It was ugly,” said assistant coach Tracy Williams. The girls continue to make some fundamental mistakes on the floor, particularly passing mistakes. The Lady Goats turned the ball over 31 times in this game while Cashmere had only 10 turnovers.

“Our recipe for success is to take care of the ball,” said Coach Tom Robinson. “We played well for 2 ¼ quarters and I guess we took the foot off the gas. We couldn’t stop them defensively. We were real competitive and now we’re trying to figure out what happened.

Coach Tom Robinson has some work cut out for his coaching staff during practice because on Friday night the Lady Goats play Okanogan who Robinson calls the best team in the state. “We have our work cut out for us, but if we can knock them off, we’ll be tied for first in the league.”

Chelan is a very young team with only two seniors on the floor, but the talent is there. With a little more seasoning, the Lady Goats should finish the season well.
