10-29-11 Chelan v Omak/Cashmere

Lady Goats end volleyball season as CTL champions

By Richard Uhlhorn

Last Saturday, October 29, the Chelan Volleyball team finished off its regular CTL season as the Caribou Trail League Champions. They ended the season with a 10-0 record and had five honored as CTL 1st Team-All League players, and two players honored as 2nd Team-All League players.

The Junior Varsity team also went undefeated in league play this year and only lost to the Wenatchee J.V. squad.

Omak came to town on Saturday and went home after three games, losing 25-9, 25-3, 25-8. “Our serving was tough as we accumulated 16 aces and served 69 of 71 at the service line,” stated Coach Donene Hendricks.

Chelan’s top servers on the day were Abby Phelps (10/10 w/2 aces), McKenna Hawkins (15-15 w/3 aces) and Olivia Plew (20/20 w/7 aces). Phelps also led the team in this match with 13 kills. Courtney Dietrich and Darcy Austin both added seven kills each and Oliva Plew ended the match with five kills. Clancy Courtney and Mandy Robison combined for five more kills.

On Saturday, November 5, Chelan will host the Bi-District Tournament which is a combination of the top 3 CTL teams and top 3 NEA league teams. “We will play at 3:30  at the High School gym against the winner of the CTL #3 match against Freeman or another team to be determined.”

As the defending state champions, Chelan has a much different look than last year. The team has emerged from last year’s success as a better defensive team and a multi-faceted offensive team capable of changing its offense up along the entire line.

The Lady Goats are definitely back in the hunt to repeat last year’s state championship having won a number of Invitational Tournaments like South Whidbey and the more recent Wenatchee Invitational that Chelan won against a state ranked 4A team.

Earlier in the week, Chelan traveled to Cashmere to play the Bulldogs.

The varsity won the match in four sets with the scores of 25-12, 25-20, 20-25, 25-15. “We started the match passing, serving and hitting very well,” said Hendricks. “In the third set we had a large amount of hitting errors coupled with some passing errors.”

After losing the third game 20-25, Coach Hendricks was please to see the team bounce back, get on track and start passing and hitting more consistently.
