Robin Weathersby had a huge game against Cascade both defensively and offenstivel.
Chelan goes undefeated in league play and
captures CTL championship
Will face Riverside next Saturday in Chelan
by Richard Uhlhorn
It was a perfect night for football when the Chelan Goats faced off against the Cascade Kodiaks in Peshastin on Friday night, October 29. The Goats ended up with the victory 42-13 giving them their first undefeated league season since 1967. “It is exciting,” said Coach Darren Talley.
In the locker room after the game there was a lot of excitement generated by the team’s success. All of the coaches had an opportunity to address the team and to tell them that if they stay focused as a team, the post season will be as successful as the regular season was.
After losing to Connell in non-league action, the Goats never lost sight of their team goal which was to win the CTL and go into the post season with high expectations. Last year, many outside of Chelan thought it was a fluke that the Goats knocked Cashmere out of the playoffs. This year, many outside of Chelan thought that Cashmere would reap revenge.
Chelan proved, not only to themselves, but to all high school football fans, that they are the real thing. That as a team, they can achieve their goals.
So, it wasn’t surprising in Peshastin on Friday night, that the Goats prevailed, despite numerous calls against them and a very tough Cascade Kodiak team. In the first half, Chelan seemed to lose its focus which allowed Cascade to knock at their door before half-time. However, after the break, it was back to work for the Goats and they showed their fans and everyone else what they were made of…. A winning team that will enter the post season healthy and ready to take on all contenders.
In the first half of play, Chelan jumped into a 7-0 lead when Robin Weathersby intercepted a pass which set-up an 11 yard touchdown by Cole Schwartz early in the first quarter.
Cascade answered on a nice drive that ended with a 35 yard touchdown by Marcus Trevenio with 6:24 remaining in the first quarter of play.
Robin Weathersby answered that touchdown with one of his two touchdowns on the evening two minutes later on 14 yard run into the end zone. Then with 1:28 remaining on the clock, Matt Peterson intercepted a Cascade pass setting up a 23 yard touchdown pass from Michael Amsel to Aaron McQuaid which gave the Goats a first quarter cushion of 20-7.
Cascade was able to score a touchdown in the second quarter off a 2 yard run by Elijah Nash to put the Kodiaks within striking distance of the Goats at the end of the half 21-13.
After a rather lackluster first half, the Goats regained their focus and came out in the third quarter of play and scored two more touchdowns. Weathersby pulled down a 9 yard touchdown pass from Amsel with 4:17 left in the third and Cole Schwartz picked off a Cascade pass to set-up another Chelan offensive drive. With 3:03 remaining in the third, Schwartz ran the ball in from the 5 yard line giving Chelan a 35-13 cushion entering the fourth quarter.
With 10:34 remaining in the game, quarterback Michael Amsel Jr. ran the ball 22 yards for Chelan’s final touchdown. With the cushion 42-13, Talley put in his younger players to give them some game time and they held Cascade scoreless while the clock ran down.
Everyone was smiling after the game and looking forward to the post season which begins next Saturday, November 6 at 1 p.m. in Chelan against Riverside.
