Lady Goats bring home fourth place trophy from state
By Richard Uhlhorn
With only three minutes to go, senior guard, Kelli Bowers, capped off her high school basketball career with a three point shot that propelled the Goats into the lead over the Lakeside Eagles for good allowing the Goats to take home a fourth place trophy with a 47-43 victory.
This was one more nail biter game that could have gone either way between two very good teams. The Goats and Eagles both went to the locker room with a 22-all tie at the break
The game continued to play out with Goats leading by one at the end of three. Just when it looked as if Chelan was going to finally break free of the scoring stranglehold between the two equally balance teams, the Eagles would tie it back up with a three point shot by Lexie Zappone.
With remaining to play, the score was tied at 33-all. Chelan grabbed the lead back and was out front 36-33, when Zappone hit another three point shot to tie the game again at 36-all with 4:42 remaining.
Chelan answered with a two point field goal to go back into the lead, 38-36, when Zappone hit one more of her 6/9 three point shots to put the Eagles into the lead 39-38.
That was when Kelli Bowers, who was only 1 for 5 from beyond the three point line, nailed a trey with only three minutes to go, and put Chelan back in the lead 41-39. This was the shot she will remember in her outstanding high school basketball career. The shot that put Chelan in the lead for good.
From this point it was still a battle, and Lakeside has to be applauded for never giving up, but Houston Robison made a free throw to make it 42-39, handing the Eagles a three point deficit. The Eagles made one more field goal to get within one point, but Taylor McClellan made one more field goal off a nice assist by Jaicee Harris to put Chelan back to three points.
Houston Robison fouled and the Eagles nailed both free throws to get within one point again with only remaining on the clock. As the clock ran down, Harris pumped in a field goal off an assist by Cari Williams to take Chelan back out to a three point lead 46-43.
The Eagles had one more three point attempt and a field goal attempt that fell short and Chelan was able to get the ball back for the final time on a defensive rebound by Jaicee Harris.
It was a great tournament for the Lady Goats and the fourth place trophy they brought home is the 10th State Tournament trophy in the past 12 years. Thatís a record to be proud of.
