Goats bring home 5th place trophy from State Tourney

After losing their first game on Wednesday night at the WIAA 1A State Basketball Tournament, the Chelan Goats battled back through three more games to claim fifth place at the tournament.
Game four against the Nooksack Valley Pioneers proved to be every bit as tough as any game the Goats played all year. After roaring out to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter, Nooksack roared back, outscoring the Goats 21-10 in the second quarter to get within three points at the break.
From that point on it was a battle to see who would end up as the winner and this game was a true nail biter. With less than a minute to go, Michael Amsel Jr. fouled a Nooksack player with the score 60-58. Nooksack took advantage and evened the score at 60-all. “I think we are going to have to play a fifth quarter,” quipped statistician Tracy Willams.
Amsel ended up bringing the ball down court in the final seconds and was fouled with only 4.4 seconds remaining in regular play. He came through and hit both free throws to put Chelan in the lead 62-60. Nooksack had a clean look on their final possession but it didn’t go.
“I was very sad for the team when I fouled that guy,” said Amsel. He redeemed himself at the other end of the court.
After the game was over and trophies handed out, the Nooksack coach said, “We should have hit a few more of our free throws.
Coach Joe Harris told his players to not worry about the officiating. To just go out and play the game the best that they could. “I’m so proud of this team,” he stated right after the game. “We played into their hands for awhile, but adjusted.”
His son Joey Harris said, “That was fun.” Harris eclipsed Ryan Hansen’s old 1A scoring record by 16 points and now holds the all-time scoring record at 2398 points in his high school career.
