High school sailors take 18th in Seattle

Chelan High School sailors competed in a double-handed (two person) sailing race at Portage Bay in Seattle on Saturday, March 6. Andrew Jones and Mackenzie Kramer sailed a Vanguard 15 to an 18th place finish after four races in light wind. Fifty two teams from around the Northwest competed in these races. “Finishing 18th is not bad considering that it was their first time in the Vanguard 15,” said Russ Jones, Lake Chelan Sailing Association High School Racing Team organizer.

The Vanguard 15 is a popular one design racing dinghy (no changes to the boat) designed by Bob Ames. It is a double-handed (two person) monohull sailboat with a sloop rig (one headsail one main sail). Ideally the combined weight of the crew is between 270 and 340 lb (150 kg) and both members hike off the boat to keep it flat. Its revolutionary design allows it to plane while sailing upwind in 12 knots (22 km/h) of breeze or more.

The Lake Chelan Team has racked up some accomplishments with Andrew Jones taking the Bronze Medal sailing a Laser at the Junior Olympics in Seattle and placing third at the High School Championships held at Cascade Locks, Oregon last Fall.

The next competition for the team will be at Orcas Island on March 27.

The High School Team is open to High School students from Chelan or Manson. The Lake Chelan Sailing Association would like to increase the high school team to ten sailors. Students who are interested do not have to be experienced sailors but must be willing to commit to weekly practice.

In addition to the racing team the Lake Chelan Sailing Association provides free sailing instruction, boating safety courses, races, cruises and social events. LCSA owns 20 sailboats which are available for member use. Go to sailchelan.com for more information about sailing on Lake Chelan.
