The Chelan Lady Goats added one more win to the current undefeated basketball season by beating the Cashmere Lady Bulldogs by a score of 53-39.
The Goats, missing Jaicee Harris' presence, had to feel their way through the first half on Saturday, December 19, against a hard fighting Cashmere team. "We were out rebounded 28-9 and fell behind on the score board 24-20 at that end of the first half," said assistant coach Tracy Williams.
The Lady Goats emerged from the locker room after the break with a lot of confidence and hustle, outscoring Cashmere 18-8 in the third quarter. "Kelli Bowers closed out the third quarter with a long 3-point shot that put our girls ski high and Cashmere back on their heels," said Williams. "That's what senior captains do! Kelli had nine of her game high 18 points in that critical third period.
The Chelan team is proving to be a very tough customer to other CTL teams and head into the Christmas break undefeated and on top of their game. "Their confidence in each other's abilities, preparation by the coaches and staying together when the going gets tough, is what makes this team successful," stated Williams.
Kelli Bowers led the team with 18 points, three steals and three assists. Taylor McClellan had 10 points on the evening and successfully guarded a very big post player throughout the game. Houston Robison came out in the second half and scored nine points and had four steals. "Houston contained Cashmere's best post player in the second half like few will this season."
Cari Williams led the team with seven rebounds and scored four points. Lyndsey Foxplayed excellent defense and pulled down four rebounds. Sarah Waszkewitz and Darcy Austin combined for six points and each had key steals in the fourth to deny Cashmere any chance of a comeback. "Sarah took her steal all the way to the hoop for a left handed lay-up and Darcy was fouled on her way to the hoop, but sank both free throws."
Off the bench, Courtney Dietrich had a great night dealing with two big, strong Cashmere post players and scored four points, grabbed two rebounds and hustled all over the floor.
Cashmere will have to wait for their visit to Chelan later this basketball season for revenge.
The Lady Goats travel to Phoenix, Arizona to play in the Cactus Jam against teams from Arizona, California and Canada December 28 to December 30.
