Chelan suffers tough loss to Kodiaks

by Richard Uhlhorn

The Chelan Goats hosted the tough and talented Cascade Kodiaks Friday evening, October 2, and lost a heartbreaking game that could have just as easily gone there way.

The final score was 31-21.

Chelan scored first with 7:10 left in the first quarter on a nice pass play from Evan Reister to Aaron McQuaid, but Cascade ran the following kick off back for a touchdown.

In the opening minute of the second quarter, Cascade intercepted a pass on Chelan's 35 and subsequently scored its next touchdown.

Cole Schwartz stripped the ball from Cascade's quarterback and ran the ball in for Chelan's second touchdown and Chelan was back in the game 13-14 after missing the point after attempt.

It was then Cascade who answered with a long drive with 9:39 remaining in the second quarter to give them the 21-13 edge.

Cascade came out after halftime and scored with 32 second remaining in the third quarter to extend its lead to 15 points, 28-13, but Chelan's Schwartz was able to score again to get within one touchdown.

Cascade kicked a field goal with 2:12 to take a 10 point lead giving Chelan little chance to win the game and that is where the score stayed despite the Goat's best efforts to get the ball back into the end zone.

Both teams were impressive on defense and offense. Cascade found out early in this game that Chelan was ready to play some tough football. On the other hand, Chelan found out that Cascade was very good at the passing game.

The loss drops Chelan to a 2-2 record and Cascade extends its record to 4-0 to retain its first place standing in the CTL.

CTL results from Friday night:

     Cascade 31 - Chelan 21

     Okanogan 56 - Lake Roosevelt 6

     Cashmere 38 - Omak 12

     Tonasket 34 - Brewster 0 (homecoming)

Next week Okanogan.

Coach Talley's report follows:

More to gain as each week unfolds for many of our young players

Chelan's young players came out excited and held Cascade on it's first drive to three downs and punt.  After a great punt return by Robin Weathersby Chelan punched it's first drive into the end zone and with Alby Paz kick on the extra point Chelan was on top 7 - 0.  Youthful excitement was running high on the kickoff and overly aggressive defenders allowed Cascade to take the ball 88 yards and into the end zone.  The extra point kick was good and the score was quickly back to 7-7.  Game on.  Chelan's offense scored more points on Cascade than the three previous opponents Cascade had faced combined.  Chelan's steady running game out gained Cascade on the ground.  Chelan's defense held a potent running game of Cascade to it's lowest (145 yards rushing) total of the year, but could not stop Cascade's passing attack which ended up being the difference in the game.  Chelan's defense kept Cascade throwing short all night - not allowing a long ball, except two long passes which scored, add that to the early kickoff returned for a TD and those two big plays made a 21 point advantage to Cascade in the game.

Evan Reister's first pass of the game was a perfect fade to Aaron McQuaid in the end zone.  Hard blocking and running by Chelan verses a stingy Cascade defense was a battle all night long.

Defensively Matt Pittsinger and Adam Hendricks our two middle linebackers continues to shine leading the team in tackles with 15 and 9 respectively.  Cole Schwartz a sophomore outside linebacker had one of his best nights of the season reigning in 13 tackles and 1 forced fumble which he recovered and ran 43 yards for a TD.  Defensive backs Aaron McQuaid, Matt Peterson, and Robin Weathersby played hard to the last whistle with 13, 12, and 8 tackles each.  Robin Weathersby added a spectacular diving interception in the opponents end zone to stop a drive.

Our all new special team kicking was again done well by Jose Aparicio (punts), Jose Ramirez (kick off), and Alby Paz (PAT/FG).  They are all getting better week by week.
