Goats lose non-league opener to Ephrata 73-69

by Richard Uhlhorn

The Chelan High School gymnasium was rocking Tuesday night as the Chelan Goats opened their basketball season against the 2A Ephrata Tigers and ended up losing in overtime 73-69.

The atmosphere was electric and standing room only as both Chelan and Ephrata fans filled the gym.

For an opening basketball game, the players gave the fans everything they came to see and then some. Both Chelan's Joe Harris and Ephrata's Patrick Simon showed why they are continuing their careers in college next year. Harris goes to Virginia and Scheelke will most likely play at WSU.

Harris pumped in 31 while Simon had 22 on the night. No one was giving an inch throughout the game and Harris forced overtime in the waning seconds of the fourth quarter to tie the game at 64.

In overtime, the game continued to be exciting with Harris pumping in another shot to tie the game at 66-all with 3 minutes remaining. In the end, however, Ephrata got the edge and was able to hold on for a 73-69 victory over the Goats.

Chelan looked good out the starting gate with some nice three point shooting by Aaron McQuaid who ended up with 18 points, some great under the basket work by Matt Engstrom and great ball handling and shooting by Joe Harris. Rounding out Chelan's solid team effort was Robin Weathersby, Josh Burbery, Tyler James and Michael Amsel Jr.

Chelan should make the season very interesting this year. It's been 10 long years since Chelan won the 1A State Basketball Championship. They have a long way to go to repeat the win, but they certainly showed that they have the potential this year.

Chelan's next outing will be in the Toyota Center on Saturday night beginning at 8 p.m. against the Lake Roosevelt Raiders, another team returning the majority of their players.

It should be a good one.
