Chelan Baseball team achieves academic stardom

Open District play at home this coming Saturday

The Chelan High School Baseball Team is not only the WIAA 1A Baseball Academic State Champions, they are on the road to the playoffs. With Omak sweeping the Okanogan Bulldogs last Saturday, Chelan took sole possession of fourth place in the Caribou Trail League, giving them a home field advantage in Round 1 of the District Playoffs on Tuesday, May 11, beginning at 4:30 p.m. Chelan will play Omak for the chance to move to Round Two in Wenatchee on Saturday, May 15, against the winner of the Brewster/Okanogan game.

 

Winning the academic championship is an award these young men can be proud of. The teamís combined grade point average is 3.62 out of a possible 4.0 and was the highest in the State for 1A baseball teams.

 

Coach Burbery and his team of Alex Brown, Jacob Burbery, Josh Burbery, Niles Desmarais, Cyrus Desmarais, Brooks Gatzemeier, Adam Hendricks, Kyle Nelson, Jesse Quigley, William Ray, Evan Reister, and Matt Robinson will be honored at the State Baseball Championship at County Stadium in Yakima on Saturday, May 29th at 4pm.

 

On Friday, May 7th Chelan travelled to Lake Roosevelt for a double header and came home with a sweep in their final league games of the season.

 

Chelan won the opener with a score of 14-1 Chelan in 5 innings  Josh Burbery took the mound in this game and stuck out 9 while giving up only 1 hit and 2 walks. Defensively, the Goats only had 2 errors.

 

Offensively, the bats were hot all day. Evan Reister was 4-4, with a double and 5 RBI's, Cyrus Desmarais 2-4 with2 doubles and 2 RBI's, Josh Burbery 2-4 with a triple and 3 RBI's, Will Ray 2-3, Alex Brown 1-2, Kyle Nelson 1-4, with a lead off triple in the 1st inning, and Gabe Quigley was 1-5 with 2 RBI's, for a total of 13 Mountain Goat hits in the opener.

 

In game two Chelanís bats didn't cool off. The Goats racked up 13 runs on 18 hits, 6 of which were triples. The Goats won the nightcap 13-3 after 6 innings. 

 

Kyle Nelson was 3-3, Josh Burbery 3-4 with 2 triples, Niles Desmarais 3-4, Evan Reister 2-3 with 2 triples, Jesse Quigley 2-4 with 1 double and a triple, Gabe Quigley 2-4 with a triple, Adam Hendricks 2-4, Will Ray 1-3.

 

Alex Brown pitched 5 innings and struck out 11,  giving up 4-BB and 3 hits. Cyrus Desmarais came in as the closer, getting 3 strikeouts and giving up 1 hit in the final inning of play.
