MANSON BASEBALL @ PATEROS

Coach Hill reports……

GAME #1:

PATEROS 14 MANSON 3

This game started out alright for us in the first inning as Wade Gross reached base on a dropped third strike followed by a single by Schuyler Neff and then Robbie Pittman knocked gross in with ground-rule double over the right field fence. Unfortunately, we could not keep pace with Pateros as they scored seven runs in the bottom of the inning. During the first game we really struggled to put the ball in play. For the game the two Pateros pitchers combined to strike fourteen trojan batters out. The first two pitchers that we saw were by far the two best that we have seen all year, both kids threw hard and had some really nice off speed stuff. Wade Gross had one hit and scored a run, Schuyler Neff had one hit, Robbie Pittman had one hit and one run batted in, Curtis McClellen had one run batted in on a sacrifice fly to center, Jordan Pittman scored a run, Stellen Giffin had a hit and scored a run and Leonel Castro had two hits and one run batted in. Giffin also made an incredible throw from right field throwing a runner at the plate, while Jordan Pittman did a great job applying the tag to the runner on the play.

GAME #2:

PATEROS 18 MANSON 7

The second game went much better for us as we held a 5-0 lead after the second inning, we really came to play for awhile. Schuyler Neff hit our first out of the park home run of the past two years! His home run wasn't just a pop fly though, he really hit it on a line to center field. Neff's home run gave us a 1-0 lead at the end of the first, while Robbie Pittman sat the billygoats down in the bottom of the first inning. Then in the second Curtis McClellen got things started with well placed single to right field, followed by two straight walks to Stellen Giffin and Leonel Castro. With the bases loaded Wade Gross stood in and hit a line drive single up the middle to score two more runs, Robbie Pittman followed that with a single to left to score two more! After the four run second we had trouble getting runs even though we continued to get base runners, we also struggled to get outs as Pateros had a huge second inning themselves including a grandslam following three straight walks. Defensively we did a better job of fielding the ball and making good throws. Willie Jones made a great hustle play during the third inning. On a passed ball Pateros scored a run and on the throw from the catcher to the pitcher we over threw that also, so in came the other runner, but because Jones was hustling he was able to make a Jeter-like catch and toss to Jordan at the plate to get the third out! Giffin had another outfield assist as he threw from his knees to get a runner out at second base. Wade Gross had two hits and two runs batted in and scored a run, Schuyler Neff had two hits and one run batted in and scored a run, Robbie Pittman had two hits while also getting hit by a pitch and had two runs batted in, Jordan Pittman reached base on a fielders choice, Blake Calleson reached base on a walk, Migi Escalera had walk and scored a run, Curtis McClellen had his first hit of the season and scored a run, Stellen Giffin had two walks and scored a run, Leonel Castro had a hit a walk a run and two runs batted in. Neff also had a great bunt for a hit, while also moving the runner over.

Even though we got beat today, there were a lot of positives to take from these games, as the kids made a lot of improvement in many different aspects the game. Neff showed a lot of great leadership throughout both games, something we have been waiting for someone to step up and do all year season long. The kids never gave up in either game especially our pitchers even when they were struggling (Gross, Robbie, Neff and Coggins.) We missed almost no signs during the double header, the kids executed the signs all day long, which was a huge improvement from where we were just last Saturday! In the second game we really cut down on our strike outs, and a couple of very questionable calls gone our way who knows what might have happened as we probably would have had a much bigger lead than 5-0 in the second inning. All in all it was a pretty fun day of baseball even with how cold it was.
