The Lady Goat seniors said it all...
Kilee Lippincott was happy to be guarding someone her size. "We are just happy to have fifth place," she told GLC's Dave Spanjer after the game. Sydney Austin added, "It's so exciting... I don't even know what to say. It wad definitely worth it, getting up so early for." Darby Jenkins said, "It's awesome with all the fans and support. It was a great way to end the season." AnnAlise Nelson who turned 18 today said, "We all get along so well...we just rallied." And Jamie Brunner. "It's always a fun challenge. This week has been a fun experience.
Seniors SydneyAustin, Darby Jenkins, AnnAlise Nelson, Jamie Brunner and Kilee Lippincott (not shown) were happy girls after helping their team win fifth place at the State Basketball tournament.
And so, the seniors on the Lady Goats finished their high school basketball career on a high note. This was the ninth trip to the State Tournament and for first year coach Tom Robinson, a highlight of the season. "I'm so proud of them. I think we struggled a little bit, but we never backed down. These girls are really goal setters."
Robinson said after the first loss on Wednesday, the girls set a goal to win the fifth place trophy. They did it on Saturday against the hard charging and talented Toledo Indians.
By the end of the first quarter of play, Chelan knew they had a game on their hands when the buzzer sounded and the Lady Goats found themselves down 11-14. Toledo continued to be tenacious in the 2nd quarter of play and the Lady Goat were having a hard time containing them, but kept it closed.
By the end of the first half, the Goats knew they would have to adjust to Toledo's aggressive, fast paced game. Chelan went to the locker room down by three points, 22-25.
The third quarter opened up with Kelli Bowers hitting a shot to get Chelan within one point. Then it was Jamie Brunner hitting a little jumper to take the Goats into the lead 26-25. Bowers stole a pass, got double teamed under the basket and Jaicee Harris came up with a bucket to take Chelan up 28-25. Then Kilee Lippincott took charge and put in a basket to give Chelan a 30-27 lead.
Chelan never looked back and by the end of the third quarter, they enjoyed a 41-32 lead.
Down the stretch, the Lady Goats let Toledo get back into its style of play for a second and the Indians closed the gap to six points, before taking control again. With to go in the game, Kelli Bowers put a real cap on the game with a three ball and Chelan was enjoying a 52-38 lead which they finished out to win the game 56-45.
All in all, the Lady Goats, seniors who finished their high school basketball careers off, the entire coaching staff, fans and parents can be really proud of what these girls did this season.
No one said it better than Assistant Coach Tracy Williams when he sent Linda Jo's photos up for posting on GoLakeChelan.com
