by Richard Uhlhorn
Iím very happy,Ē said Coach Jay McGuffin. ďI couldnít ask for a better end of the seniorís high school wrestling careers. Now a new season starts.Ē
For the third straight year, Coach McGuffin has led his team to a Caribou Trail League Championship. ďWinning the league championship was our first goal. Now we have to go for the District Championship,Ē said McGuffin.
Chelan will begin post season on Friday, February 6 and Saturday February 7, at Chelan High School. Seeding will take place on Monday, February 2.
Chelanís last home match was against the Tonasket Tigers and Chelanís senior wrestlers and their parents were honored. Graduating this year are Tyler Allen, David Anderson, Rudy Barrios, Tyler Clark, Jose Garcia, Sean Gervais and Gage Schmidt. See the photo gallery for pics.
Tonasket always brings a group of well coached, highly experienced wrestlers to the table and Thursday nightís match was no exception. Chelanís Cole Schwartz (160 lbs) and Rudy Barrios (171 lbs) got tangled up with two of Tonasketís talented wrestlers and both lost.
Schwartz, a freshman faced Tonasket senior Kevin Cruz in the 160 pound class and found himself on the losing end of a decision 9-0. Schwartz is still young and Cruz overwhelmed the young wrestler.
Barrios, a senior, has limited experience, but has been coming on strong towards the later stages of this season, but he ended up losing a match to sophomore Keegan McCormick 18-1.
From that point on, Chelan took control of the matches with Davey Anderson (189 lbs) coming out strong against Josh Lofthus and scoring six points on a pin with :32 seconds remaining in the first round.
Hank Burton (130 lbs) also scored a pin over Riley Buzzard in the second round of action. It was then young Gage Henryís turn on the mat. As a freshman, Gage is beginning to develop his skills as a wrestler and will serve the team well in the future, but he didnít have a chance against much strongerTonasket senior Tey Jensen who pinned Henry in the second round.
At 140 pounds, senior Gage Schmidt continued his winning ways by defeating Lee Leavell in a major decision, 14-0.
Tyler Allen (152 lbs) faced off with Tonasketís Dustin Silverthorn and finished a fine effort by the Chelan wrestling team in a tough match which Allen ended up with the 6-3 decision giving Chelan a 49-27 team win and the CTL championship.
The upcoming District Championships will bring all District VI teams to Chelan for one night and one day of wrestling in the Chelan Gymnasium. This is where the rubber meets the road for each individual wrestler. The top six placers at the District Tournament will qualify to wrestle at the Regional Tournament to qualify for the State Championship in the Tacoma Dome. The Mat Classic is billed as the largest high school sports spectacle in the state with every classification wrestling at the same time.
Come on out to watch these kids go at it next Saturday and support Chelanís wrestlers.
