Chelan locks up Cashmere in the ‘Dog House’
Wrestlers prove they are the team to beat
By Richard Uhlhorn
The Goat Wrestling Team traveled to the “Dog House” in Cashmere to take on the Bulldogs in league action last Thursday night and came home with a resounding team win over the tough Cashmere team 45-25.
The win leaves the Goats as major contenders for the CTL Wrestling League title. They put on a dominant performance against Cashmere. “To beat Cashmere is always tough,” said Coach Jay McGuffin. “To beat them at their house is even tougher, but we were mentally and physically prepared to do what we had to do in order to win.”
Senior wrestler Gage Schmidt set the tone for Chelan by defeating Cashmere’s Van Hoven in a tight decision 9-4. Then Jose Garcia got the team rolling with a pin in the first round over Tanner Woods in the 145 pound class.
But the match of the evening came at 152 pounds with two time state placer Tyler Allen out lasting last year’s second place state finisher, Josh Mason 4-3.
“It’s those matches you love to watch as a coach because the quality of wrestling is so high,” remarked McGuffin. “Allen and Mason went at it hard for the entire six minutes and my jaw was on the floor for the last 30 seconds. I was numb because I didn’t know what was going to happen.”
In the end Allen and Mason had a big scramble with only a couple seconds remaining, no points were scored and Allen won the match. ”Tyler’s match was probably the turning point (against Cashmere) because you could actually see the motivation to win on the faces of our wrestlers getting ready to hit the mat.”
Chelan’s freshman came up big as well. Jose Aparicio stepped it up and pinned his opponent at 215 pounds and Joel Mata got the goats another six points by pinning his opponent at 125 pounds.
