The Liberty Bell Mountain Lions always bring a few very tough wrestlers to the mat when facing opponents. For senior Tyler Allen (152 pounds), Liberty Bell’s senior Ray Jefferson has always been a tough opponent and Tuesday night’s match against the Mountain Lions was no different.
Jefferson scored first with a takedown, but Allen reversed that position and put Jefferson into a near-fall position giving Allen a 5-2 advantage at the end of round 1. Round two found Jefferson coming back with a reversal to get within one point of Allen, but Allen added two points with a reversal of his own ending round two with a 7-4 lead.
In round three it was Allen scoring again for 9-4 lead and what looked like a sure decision, but Jefferson came back to score a reversal and three point near-fall at the end of the match to tie it 9-all forcing overtime.
In wrestling, the first person to score in overtime is the winner. Both Allen and Jefferson went after each other aggressively, but Allen was the one to score the takedown and win the decision 11-9 to the delight of Chelan’s wrestling fans.
Jefferson will be back looking for revenge during the District Wrestling Tournament is three weeks.

Gage Henry (135 lbs.) found himself pinned by John McMillan and Rudy Barrios (171 lbs.) by Kjell Johnson. “Both Gage and Rudy had no penetration when they shot and ended on their backs,” said Coach Jay McGuffin. “I’m trying to get the JV kids as many matches as I can.”
Liberty Bell accommodated the Goats by allowing some good exhibition matches after the varsity action with Joel Montes, Cole Soprano and Jose Aparicio all getting a chance to hit the mat.
“We came out and set the pace tonight,” said McGuffin. “There were a couple of instances where a few wrestlers were not finishing their moves, but all in all I thought we were aggressive tonight.”
Chelan has only three weeks left in the regular wrestling season before the District Tournament which will take place in Chelan.
In Christmas Holiday action, Chelan traveled to Royal City, suffered a bus accident and took third place over all at that tournament. “We were without Jose Lopez and Davey Anderson. With them, I think we might have won that tournament.”
The bus accident, which hasn’t been widely reported, was one of those instances where the driver got sucked off the road in the snow. Fortunately, no one was seriously hurt. and the team went on to finish well at the tournament.
