At 140 pounds, Gage Schmidt is going to be a tough wrestler to beat this year. He is unbeaten on the season so far and that includes wins at each tournament the Goats have attended. He took first place at the Connell Tournament this last Saturday.
Huge win by Chelan wrestlers this weekend

In high school wrestling circles, the Connell Wrestling Tournament is a tournament that serves notice of just how tough each team competing is this early in the season. For Chelan, taking the team championship on Saturday, December 13, against the other 12 teams competing, was huge.
“Overall it was just a great day,” stated Coach Jay McGuffin in his Monday morning report. “It’s nice to see your athletes correctly and successfully use technique shown in practice.”
Chelan won the team championship with 296 points with Warden (always a tough competitor) taking second place with 234 points. “The hard work we put in daily from to is really starting to pay-off, and it shows with dominating performances like this,” said McGuffin.
Chelan placed seven wrestlers in the finals and six of them came home with wins as follows:
119 pounds – Jose Lopez
125 pounds – Dillon Parker
140 pounds – Gage Schmidt
145 pounds – Jose Garcia
152 pounds – Tyler Allen
189 pounds – Davey Anderson
Sean Gervais took second place at 215 pounds and Hank Burton placed third in one of the more exciting matches of the day. “With 10 seconds left, Hank needed 5 points to win the match,” said McGuffin. Burton went for his signature move, hit it and won the decision 13-12 in what is described as one of the more exciting matches of the entire day.
Doug Ramsey took third and Rudy Barrios placed fourth at 171 pounds by beating his teammate Cole Soreano. Cole Schwartz also placed fourth at the tournament. “All in all it was an exciting day for us,” reported McGuffin.
This is a busy week for the Goats. On Tuesday they travel to Warden for a non-league dual and on Thursday the team goes to Lake.Roosevelt for a league match. On Saturday the team travels to the Tacoma SunDome for Mat Classic XVIII. “This should be a great week for us. I’ll keep you all updated,” said McGuffin.
