Chelan loses 69-66 heart breaker to Kings in OT

by Richard Uhlhorn

It was the kind of game that keeps everyone on pins and needles. With only 30 seconds remaining in regulation play, Chelan was down 55-58 when Joe Harris brought the ball down court and pumped in a three point shot to tie the game at 58-all, forcing overtime.

At that point, Joe Harris had 33 points chalked up in a game that Chelan had to play catch up throughout.

In the opening minute of OT, Kings Nick Hardy hit a trey to take Kings out 61-58. Harris brought the ball back down court, got double teamed, but passed off to Mat Engstrom who was immediately fouled. Mat miss the front end of his free throw, but nailed the next one to take Chelan to within 2 points of Kings.

Then Ryan Hoff, who had been hot all night from beyond the three point line hit another trey to give Kings the edge 64-59. Harris answered with a two point shot and the score was 64-61 Kings. Chelan kept the game within two points until Mat Engstrom fouled out with 17 seconds remaining and the scoreboard in favor of Kings 66-64.

Kings hit both shots from the free throw line to give them a four point edge and finally closed the heart breaker out 69-66.

Chelan began the game in the lead 10-4 in the first quarter, but Kings tied it up 10-10 at the end of the quarter.

In the second quarter of play, both teams traded the lead and by the end of the first half, Chelan was trailing by one point, 23-24.

It was in the third quarter of play that Kings was able to stretch their lead on the three point shooting of Ryan Hoff who equaled a tournament record for three point shots with eight total. Kings outscored Chelan 19-14 in the third.

It was the fourth quarter that had Kings in the lead throughout, but ending up regulation play on an exciting three point shot by Joe Harris with only :12 seconds remaining.

It was a game that was as frustrating as it was exciting. It was a game that will be remembered for a long time. As Steve Stamps said from the sidelines towards the end of overtime, "I'm speechless right now. Kings has played a smart game."

Mat Engstrom had 13 points for the evening and Harris pumped in 38 total.

Chelan will play the loser of the Port Townsend/Seattle Academy game in process as this is being written.  This game will take place at 4 p.m. for fourth or seventh place.

Play-by-play action will be called on GoLakeChelan.com by Dave Spanjer with color being added by Steve Stamps.
