If there was any question that Chelan Junior Kelli Bowers is serious about her golf game, she proved just how serious on Thursday, May 28, by winning her third straight State Golfing Championship.
She continued her dominance over other 1A golfers at the WIAA State Golf Championships at the Columbia Pointe Golf Course in Richland. She dominated the field over the two day championship by winning a 27-shot victory over her nearest competitor.
After shooting an even par 72 in Round one of the State Championship on Wednesday, Kelli came back on Thursday and shot a 2-over 74 to easily capture the title. "Her score was even more impressive when you consider the number of near-miss putts she had during the second round today," stated Coach Kirk Einspar. "Kelli's score at a different course would have placed her in the top five of the 4A girls."
Pretty impressive stuff for this young golfer.
Senior Dan Campbell also made the cut to play in Round 2 and came back with an 80 for a two-round total of 157 which netted him 30th place in the field of 80 golfers. "Dan struggled a bit with consistency today, but made some incredible putts to keep himself in the match," said Einspar.
Neither of the Chelan boys or girls who competed in Round 1 qualified to go on to the second round, so they were unable to compete for the overall team score/competition.
Other Round 2 finishers from our district included Kent Foust of Cashmere who shot a 73-71 (144) and tied for 7th overall, Wade Gebbers of Brewster with a 73-76 (149) taking18th place, Jon Scott of Cascade (Leavenworth) shooting 80-80 (160) tied for 34th, Cody Wells of Okanogan 78-83 (161) in 38th and Ryan Price also of Okanogan with 81-81 (162) tied for 39th.
