Girls take League and District Championship
as reported by Chelan Golf Coach Kirk Einspar
With Chelanís Kelli Bowers leading the way with a 4-over par 77 and medalist for the girls of the Caribou Trail League and District 6, the Chelan girls took League and District Champions awards Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at the Banks Lake Golf Club on a windy day that affected many of the scores on both the girls and boys sides of things.
Kelli had a great day, shooting a 2-under 34 on the front nine, and a 6-over 43 on the back nine for the par-73 course. Her score was even 4 strokes below the best of the boys, and 26 shots better than the next girl, her teammate Michelle Munneke (103), who had a very good day herself and played very consistently the whole day (50-53).
Kelli & Michelle both earned a trip to the 1A state competition, along with Lake Rooseveltís Kylie Friedlander (120), to be held next Wed-Thurs (May 27-28) in Richland at the Columbia Pointe Golf Course. In addition to Kelli and Michelle, Daneijha Weigel (5th place) and Lexi Burchett (6th) also garnered All-District honors for placing in the top 10.
For the boys, Cashmereís Kent Foust took medalist honors with an 81, and Okanogan took team honors with a 358, besting Chelanís boys by 2 strokes (360).
It was a rough day for the Chelan boys, but they still came away with 3 state berths with senior Dan Campbell (87) in 8th place, junior Cory Dowell (89) in 9th, and senior Johnny Griffith (90) in 10th place and all three making All-District honors.
The boys will also have their state competition at Columbia Pointe next week, sharing the course with the girls.
