Lady Goats win overtime thriller over Kodiaks
By Richard Uhlhorn
With only 19 seconds remaining to play and Cascade’s Lady Kodiaks (7-6 record) in the lead 45-42, Kelli Bowers did it again… she hit that famous 3-pointer of hers to tie the game at 45-all and force Cascade into overtime.
In overtime play, Chelan scored first with an inside shot to go up by two. Cascade was fouled on their side of the court, giving them a chance to even the score up. The shooter missed her first attempt, but hit the second from the free throw line to make the score 47-46. The Bowers got free again and pumped in another beautiful three pointer to put Chelan in the lead, 50-46.
This was good for Chelan because Darby Jenkins had already fouled out and Jaicee Harris picked up her fifth with remaining on the clock. That left Chelan without any tall players to counter the devastating inside game of Cascade’s Ashley Wright, who had a game high 21 points and 19 rebounds.
As time slipped away, Cascade got back to within two points with 21.6 seconds remaining on the clock. There only game plan at that juncture was to foul a Chelan player as quickly as possible and hope for missed free throws. Kelli Bowers stepped the line, took a big breath and put both shots in the hoop giving Chelan a four point cushion with only 21 seconds left.
Chelan fouled Cascade with 16 seconds to play and once again the Kodiaks were within two points of tying this game up. Bowers was fouled again, and missed her fist attempt with Cascade gathering in the rebound with only two seconds remaining giving Chelan an exciting finish to their last home game of the season on a Senior night.
Chelan travel’s to Okanogan on Friday to play their final league match against the Bulldogs who are 5-8 on the regular season.
