Lady Goats lose championship game to La Salle
By Richard Uhlhorn
The Lady Goats championship game against LaSalle, defending 2B State Champions from last year, was a lesson in how a full court press could be used effectively. LaSalle pressed from the very beginning of this game and ended up winning 64-57 over the hard charging Lady Goats.
The Lady Goats were able to hold their own in the first quarter, but in the second quarter LaSalle took advantage of the Goats by playing aggressive in-your-face basketball. LaSalle was able to hold Chelan to a .304 shooting percentage in the first half while shooting .469 from the field, particularly in the second quarter where they continually created havoc on the court by stealing the ball (19 times) and forcing Chelan to turn the ball over 33 times during the game.
In the second quarter, LaSalle outscored a frustrated Lady Goat team 31-12 and went to the locker room with a 20 point lead, 42-22.
Coach Tom Robinson made some major adjustments at half time and the team came out in the third quarter and broke down LaSalle’s impressive press and roared right back into the game, making a 17-3 run on LaSalle in the third which eventually brought Chelan to within two points.
LaSalle took control of the game again in the waning minutes of the fourth quarter and looked like they were going to walk away with a 64-54 win over the Goats. At the buzzer, Kelli Bowers who had 15 points threw up a NBA three pointer that went swish giving LaSalle a seven point win 64-57.
“We got better as the game went on,” said Coach Tom Robinson, who recognizes that his team has some new work to do, i.e. learn how to break up a fast break. “They (LaSalle) are a tough team and they played well,” said Robinson. “They are the defending state champions (2B).
