This past weekend, basketball teams from around North Central Washington had a chance to play in the new Town Toyota Center in Wenatchee for a NCW Basketball Showcase on December 11, 13, and 13. Cascade, Quincy, Waterville, Cashmere, Chelan, Eastmont, Liberty Bell, Entiat, Wenatchee, Lake Roosevelt and Wahluke all had a chance to play on the court.
It took two quarters of play and a halftime break to open up a lead over the scrappy Lake Roosevelt Lady Raiders in the Toyota Center’s NCW Basketball Showcase this past Friday night and Saturday, December 12 and 13.
Chelan’s first two quarters against Lake Roosevelt were rather ho hum as both teams
struggled to find their depth perception in the big arena. At the end of the first quarter of play, the score was tied at 6-all and by the end of the first half, Chelan was only up by one point, 14-13.
“We didn’t get a quick start tonight,” said Coach Tom Robinson. “It’s a big arena and the girls were coming up short on their shots.”
They adjusted well in the third quarter of play and took a seven point lead, 27-20, over the Lady Raiders. “Our girls began to apply pressure and take better care of the basketball,” said Robinson. “I liked the good looks they were getting. We were also getting more layups.”
The Lady Goats outscored the Raiders 23-10 in the final quarter of play with Darby Jenkins and Houston Robison controlling the boards. “Houston is a great basketball player,” said Robinson. “She’s strong and goes after every ball.”
He also lauded the play of Darby Jenkins who led the team to the victory with 11 points on the night. Darby had 10 rebounds, two assists and 3 steals to cap the victory.
Kelli Bowers led the team in scoring with 13 points and Jamie Brunner pumped in eight points and Jaicee Harris was tough under the basket with nine rebounds on the night.
The new Toyota Center is beautiful, well lit and a nice facility. It’s too bad they didn’t make it big enough to handle two basketball courts so state tournaments could be held at the facility. One of the guest service employees said it was seven feet short.
