Goats need an overtime to put away Brewster Bears
By Richard Uhlhorn
It was a monumental night for the Chelan Goats and their coach, Joe Harris, as they defeated the Brewster Bears in overtime 59-48.
For Derrick Talley, it was a monumental night because he finally got a chance to suit up and play after recovering from an ankle injury in football. For Coach Joe Harris and his family, it was monumental because he was congratulated on achieving his 400th career win against Okanogan last Saturday night in front of a home town crowd.
It was monumental for the entire team because they were down three points, 37-40, with only 34 seconds remaining to play. Coming off of a timeout, the crowd knew that a three point play had been set-up in the huddle. I thought it would be Danny Campbell making the shot, but it turned out to be Joe Harris who just went up and dumped it in to tie the game at 40-all. Brewster got off one more shot, but it careened off the rim and Chelan had forced overtime play.
In the four minute overtime, with the crowd going crazy, Mat Engstrom made a nice pass to Joe Harris who laid the ball in to tie the game again at 42-all. Brewster had scored first.
Then Joe Harris, who was 4 for 6 from the three point line, hit another three pointer to take Chelan out front 45-42. From that point on, Brewster desperately tried to get back into the game by fouling Chelan.
Danny Campbell was fouled with to play and missed his one and one, but Joe Harris was fouled on the rebound and put both shots in the basket to give Chelan a five point lead. Then Julio Juarez was fouled twice and hit all four of his shots to make it a nine point lead before Brewsters Wade Gebbers hit a trey to put three more on the board.
The fouls keep coming and Derrick Talley (6 points) hit a lay-in off a pass from Harris. By the time the final buzzer went off, Chelan had forged a 11 point lead to take the win 59-48.
Joe Harris, who was not 100 percent during last Saturdays game against Okanogan, exploded for 30 points against Brewster despite sitting on the bench for most of the third quarter in foul trouble. Harris also had 10 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and one steal on the night. Mat Engstrom put in another strong performance with eight points and six rebounds. He also sat on the bench throughout the third quarter in foul trouble.
Derrick Talley, who had been sitting on the bench so far this year, scored the six points he wanted in this game. His ankle is obviously back because his lateral movement was there all night.
The entire team played well throughout the evening, but as one fan said, We still have to play Brewster on their court in the future.
