Goats take two from Cascade in baseball action by Richard Uhlhorn
Whaack... bottom of the seventh... a runner on second base... the score tied 1-1 and Adam Hendricks hit a double down the right field line that the right fielder misjudged to score the runner and win the opener against the Cascade Kodiaks 2-1 on Saturday, April 4. "Whoa," said one Cascade fan. "That was almost a homerun."
"It was a good weekend for Chelan Goat baseball," said Coach Jim Burbery. "We were able to take two games from Cascade."
Cascade is a well-schooled baseball team and the fact that Chelan was able to win both games of this doubleheader says a lot about Burbery's team this year.
Josh Burbery pitched a complete game, striking out 12 while allowing 7 walks on his way to a 2-1 no hitter.
Chelan's defense committed only three errors and supported Josh on his way to his second CTL win of the season. At first base, Curtis Pusey made a great diving play to catch a line drive between 1st and 2nd to end the game. If that ball had gotten by him, Chelan and Cascade might have played extra innings.
Offensively Chelan had six hits with the clutch double in the bottom of the 7th inning by Adam Hendricks which scored the winning run.
Kyle Nelson went 2-3 with a double , Curtis Pusey 1-3, Alex Brown 1-3, Niles Desmarias 1-2 with a double and an RBI, Adam Hendricks 1-3 with a double RBI.
Adam Hendricks strokes a double to the right field fence to score the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning of Chelan's opener against Cascade.
Game 2 - nightcap:
Alex Brown pitched a strong five innings in game two, but left the game without a decision. Kyle Nelson relieved him on the mound and finished the game, picking up his first win as a Goat.
Chelan won this one 5-3 on six hits. "We came through in clutch situations to cap this win," stated Burbery. Kyle Nelson was 1-3 with a double and scored once, Josh Burbery was 2-3 with 1 RBI, Curtis Pusey 1-2 with a double and 1 RBI, Alex Brown was 1-1 and 1 RBI, Evan Reister 1-3 with the go-ahead RBI in the bottom of the 6th, Jesse Quigley 1-2 with 1 RBI in the bottom of the 6th for an insurance run.
"We played another good game defensively, only having 1 error," said Burbery. "The boys played well in both games and never gave up. They kept coming through with plays that were needed when we needed them."
"We appreciate all of our support. It was a good crowd, and they got to see some good baseball.".
