On Saturday, April 19, a U-12 Volleyball team coached by Desiree Phelps qualified to attend the Nationals in Dallas, Texas, in June of this year. The girls, along with a number of other girls from around the area, competed at the Evergreen Regional Volleyball Tournament in Spokane on Saturday, April 19.
According to Tom Robinson, who’s daughter was on the team qualifying for the Nationals, the girls opened with a “hard-fought three game win over Grandview.” They went on to defeat Spokane’s VIP Juniors before running into the number one seeded Sandpoint Volleyball Club. They lost a tough three-game match to Sandpoint, but because of a tiebreaker, they earned the number one seed out of their pool and an automatic berth into the semifinals.
In the semi’s, the young team swept past Team Yakima and into the finals against, who else, Sandpoint again. “This time it was another close battle they eventually lost 25-21, 25-22, but the team still qualified to attend the Nationals in Dallas in June,” reported Robinson.
For Desiree Phelps, coaching this team was a validation of her coaching career in Manson. She retired as the head volleyball coach in Manson after a successful run at the WIAA State Volleyball Tournament in 2007. “This was on a whole different level for me,” she said. “I was just as proud of these kids as the high school team competing at the state tournament.” Phelps daughter is one of the young players on the National team.
“There were three teams who participated,” said Phelps. From Brewster, Brett Bosel, Marquett Miller, Peyton Oules and Alexix Madden played. From Manson it was Kendr Ellsworth and from Pateros, Jessica Dowers, Chloe Gill, Yessenia Tellez and Shantell Furlong played. Chelan was represented by Abby Phelps, Jenny Sundberg, Megan Robinson, Tess Young, Kara Kronbauer, Kaylie Kronbauer, Mekenzie Harris, Anna Kelly and Karlie Pittsinger.
The girls who will be participating in the National Tournament are Jessica Dowers, Chloe Gill, Marquett Miller, Brette Bosel, Jenny Sundberg, Abby Phelps, Megan Robinson, Tess Young.
The teams were coached by Dez, Marcy Boesel and Gene Dowers.
“It was an exciting weekend of volleyball and the girls played exceptionally well, fighting back time and again to pull out tough wins,” said Robinson.

A U14 team from the same club also went and competed in their own tournament. That team also features a number of Chelan students (8th graders) as well.
