Ready To Rumble

The Chelan Goat Football Team has been working hard on their conditioning and their game throughout the summer and fall. Friday night will be their opening game against Granite Falls, a team they lost to last year in Granite Falls.

Chelan Goats ready to rumble on the football field

Last year, the Chelan Goats ended their season with a 3-6 record which really doesn’t tell the story. “We were competitive in every single game,” said Coach Darren Talley during a telephone interview Thursday. “We could have ended up with a 6-3 or anywhere in between last year. Omak was our best game of the season and they went onto the playoffs. We beat them.”

Coach Talley is looking forward to an excellent football season from his team this year. “We lost some key players last year, but the thing I’ve watched in coaching is how the younger players mature over the summer and take the responsibility and leadership to lead the team,” said Talley.

"Just like last year, our mainstay at the wide receiver position will be the first team-all league wide receiver Brett Linehan," Talley told me. Seniors Brett, Zane Sandum, Cody Olsen, Luke Laughlin and Junior Derrick Talley have been chosen as this year's Team Captains by the team.

He’s looking to Olsen, Sandum, Linehan, Laughlin and Derrick Talley to step up as this year’s leaders. “It’s new territory for them, but when you give people responsibility, they generally step forward… especially athletes. My expectations are very high.”

“I know these kids will be fighting for the win until the last second. It’ll be so good,” said Talley.

Talley will be running what he calls a balanced offense. He says the team will run the ball 65 to 70 percent and pass it 30 to 35 percent of the time. “We’ll start off conservatively and go from there.”

The Goat running game will be handled by Derrick Talley, Greg Schultz, Luke Laughlin and fullbacks, Steven Swinford and Danny Zavala. Wide receivers include Brett Linehan, Joe Harris, Brooks Gatzemeier and Mat Engstrom.

“When Joe Harris isn’t at quarterback, we will have him in at wide receiver,” stated Talley. “He has great hands, but so has Brooks Gatzemeier and Mat Engstrom. Brooks has the best hands on the team and Engstrom has excellent hands along with being the biggest kid on the team and one of the fastest.” Brett Linehan will lead the receivers.

Head Coach Talley will be running the offense, with Assistant Coaches Kelly Linehan running special teams, Nick Snyder running the defense and Steve Stamps helping where he can. Other coaches helping the team out are Greg Cowell, Phil Harvey, AJ Marston, Tyler Minium, David Talley, Del Talley and Frank Ward.

“I’m looking forward to a great year,” said Coach Talley.

The team faces off on the gridiron against Granite Falls this coming Friday evening with the kickoff at 7 p.m.
