Lady Trojans sweep Darrington Loggers in first match
By Richard Uhlhorn
A nervous Manson team themselves falling quickly behind their first State Volleyball opponent, the Darrington Loggers. With her team falling to a 3-8 deficit, Coach Desiree Phelps called a timeout to settle her Lady Trojans down. It worked. Both teams battled for the serve, but Manson was able to tie the first game at 13-all. The Logger coach called a timeout to hopefully disrupt Manson's run and settle his darkhorse Loggers down.
Darrington came into the State Tournament after placing 3rd in their Tri-District. Manson, of course, came in as the North Central District Champions and were also ranked sixth in the state.
The Lady Trojans only allowed the Lady Loggers three more points before shutting them down 25-16. They did this with some great defensive receiving from labaro Whitni England who would pass to Katie Barnes who would set to Manson's power hitter Elizabeth Madden. On the front line, Aubrey Plew, Ashley McKenna and Kelsey Harding also put up a tremendous offensive and defensive battle at the net.
"They were a little nervous at first," said Coach Phelps. "Then they gained their confidence and started executing." The team looked extremely good through the rest of the match and ended up winning it 25-16, 25-12, 25-16.
"They will be a lot less hesitant next time," said Phelps. The team was on its way to watch their opponents play each other. "They will see what they are up against," she added.
The Trojans take the court again at 3:30 Friday afternoon for their second match and if they can win that match, they will go on to the semi-final on Saturday.
