Chelan boys win hoop fest… girls take third
Holiday Hoop Festival a huge success!
By Richard Uhlhorn
The annual Chelan Holiday Hoop Fest held over Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the Chelan Community Gymnasium and Chelan High School Gymnasium came to a close Saturday evening when the Chelan Goats and Connnell Eagles took the court in the Championship game. The Goats prevailed in a very tough, aggressive game against the Eagles and won the championship 60-47.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Lady Goats battled for third place against the Pateros Nannies and won that contest 53-25.
LaSalle, who defeated Chelan on Friday for the opportunity to play in the girls championship game against Connell’s Lady Eagles, prevailed in that contest to win the girls championship. 59-49.

This annual event had 18 teams competing for the championship titles. The teams included the Ridgefield Spudders, Orville Hornets, LaSalle Lightning, Concrete Lions, Pateros Billy Goats and Nannies, Eatonville Cruisers, Liberty Bell Mountain Lions, Connell Eagles and the Chelan Goats.
“It’s been a great tournament,” said Coach Joe Harris. “It’s a lot of work and it couldn’t happen without the support of staff and parents.”
In the middle of winter, when local business has slowed, these types of events are important additions to the local economy. “Mike at Safeway told me he couldn’t believe the foot traffic he has been getting in the store,” said Harris.
Lady Goat Coach Dane Lewman said, “Everyone’s been happy to be here. The coaches have all enjoyed the tournament. We get quality teams and get to see what areas we need to work on.”
For Coach Harris it is a special time of year to be holding a tournament. “A lot of kids I’ve coached over the years are home for the holidays and it is nice when they seek me out to wish the team luck.”
Art Campbell, his sons and a Griffith enjoyed the girls game on Friday night. They were just a few of past CHS students who were home for the holidays.
For the community… the Holiday Hoop Festival is a major shot in the economy. A big thank you needs to go out to all the sponsors, parents, coaches, teams who attend and basketball fans who make it all happen.
