Coach Jay McGuffin reported that the Chelan wrestling team was able to take third place at the Tonasket Invitational on Saturday, January 5, despite not having a full compliment of wrestlers.

Dillon Parker (112 lbs.) and Davey Anderson both captured first place at this tournament with Sean Gervais and Gage Schmidt both placing second and Jose Lopez nailing down a third place finish.

Parker won his first place championship by pinning Davis Castillo from Oroville in the final match. “Dillon Parker dominated the tournament from start to finish,” stated McGuffin.

At 189 pounds, Davey Anderson beat Ty Williquette of Rearden and Dakota Ochoa of Liberty Bell to claim his first place championship. “I’m really happy with how Davey has returned from his injury. He wrestled aggressively and stayed offensive in all three positions,” reported McGuffin.

At 140 pounds, Gage Schmidt placed second in the tournament after losing his third match of Josh Eldred of Rearden. “Gage wrestled his heart out,” stated McGuffin. “Unfortunately his bloody nose disrupted the momentum of his match.”

Sean Gervais (215 lbs.) placed second in a loss from Rory Beckstrom of Rearden. “In the third round of the final match, Sean worked hard at getting away and if finally paid off for him with an escape which tied the match up with only 30 seconds remaining,” said McGuffin. Unfortunately, Sean got taken down just before the buzzer to lose.

112-Jose Lopez  3rd Place: Corbin Merick from Tonasket, won by pin

119- Luis Rodriguez , lost in his first round to Matt Kelly Oroville

119-Hank Burton won first match with a bye, 4th Place-lost to Matt Kelly Oroville – on a better day both Luis & Hank could have beat Matt Kelly.

125-Micah Hargrove lost to Brandon Roy for 3rd  & 4th  place.

275-Doug Ramsey pinned his first opponent but lost to his second, Derek Toney from Rearden.  Ramsey took third place.

“We wrestled well individually, but as a team we could have done better.  The Team received 3rd Place.  We are going to work on our weaknesses this week in practice and prepare for our next dual meet against Brewster (away). Rearden was tough and made us work hard.”
