Lady Goats dominate net to defeat Bulldogs
By Richard Uhlhorn
As a sophomore and outside hitter, Jaicee Harris was on fire Tuesday night against the Okanogan Bulldogs. She slammed down 16 kills to help the Goats to a three game victory over a talented Bulldog team coached by Mike Gariano.
Game one started out with Chelan taking the early lead immediately, but Okanogan tied the game at 6-all, then 8-all before Chelan finally took control and didn’t look back. With four more points on the board at 12-8, Okanogan called a timeout to try and change the direction of the game in favor of his Lady Bulldogs.
It didn’t work and Chelan went out to a comfortable lead of 14-8 before Okanogan got back on the board. The Lady Goats only allowed Okanogan five more points before putting the game away with an ace to win 25-13.
Game two was a different affair altogether. Okanogan came back out after the between game huddle and played excellent volleyball, against an advanced Chelan team, taking the lead early 1-5. Chelan struggled to get back into this game and finally began a run that had Okanogan taking at timeout when the Lady Goats were within two points.
Chelan finally was able to tie Game 2 at 14-all and then forged ahead by one point 17-16. Okanogan re-tied the game at 18-all and the two teams battled to a 19-all tie before Okanogan served up a bad serve and put Chelan into the lead for good 20-19 with the Lady Goats finally winning a close game 25-20.
Game three was basically a Chelan rout over the demoralized Okanogan Bulldogs. Chelan took a 6-1 lead and never really gave up that lead, finishing with a huge 25-10 win to take the match.
Okanogan is under the experienced coaching abilities of Mike Gariano and while the team was not up to the task of the Chelan Lady Goats, they did show that later in the year they will be a contender in the league battles.
Chelan has reloaded under Coach Donene Hendricks and Assistant Coaches Connie Poirier and JoAnne Strandberg. The varsity five seniors returning from last year’s squad including Darby Jenkins, Kaylee Robelia, Sydney Austin, AnnAlise Nelson and Jamie Brunner, all of them strong, skilled volleyball players. Add setter junior Kelli Bowers and Houston Robison along with sophomores Cari Williams and Jaicee Harris, and Chelan’s Lady Goats are back in the mix to win the region and make another appearance at the State Tournament.
