Lady Goats finish fourth at Regional Tournament
By Richard Uhlhorn
It was a very long day for the Chelan Lady Goats as they worked their way through a total of 17 games of volleyball. Starting at on Saturday, November 3, the team worked pretty much non-stop until that night.
In the end, the Lady Goats enter the State Tournament in fourth place out of the regional tournament.
Chelan faced the Chewelah Cougars in their first round of play and it took five games to put the Cougars down. This put Chelan up against the number three ranked team in the state, Lakeside, who won the State Tournament last year.
Once again it was a tough match, made tougher by the fact that it took five games to finish. Prior to the first game, Kaiti Harris, visiting from college said, “This is just like the state tournament.” It was and Chelan ended up losing in the fifth game 13-15.
In the meantime, Cascade beat Freeman for the right to take on Chelan once again in a loser out match. As usual, Chelan lost its first game to Cascade and the Kodiaks, who had lost all three of their previous matches to Chelan, were determined not to let it happen again.
Chelan prevailed, but not without the loss of Sydney Austin, Chelan’s outside hitter. Sydney went down in a funny fashion and was hyperventilating which was scary to this young player. The episode took Sydney out for the rest of the tournament.
The win over Cascade guaranteed Chelan a trip to the State Tournament in Yakima on Friday, November 9, but they had to replay Chewelah to determine who was third and fourth out of this region.
Chewelah came out swinging hard and a tired Chelan team was unable to match the Cougars play who handed Chelan its first three game loss of the season.
