Zane Sandum finished off his high school football career with some impressive runs and passes.
Goats round finish football season with a great win
By Richard Uhlhorn
For the first time in high school football memory, teams not making the playoffs were given a crossover game with a regional opponent to finish off their seasons. The Chelan Goats hosted the Newport Grizzlies in an exhilarating game on a cold fall evening. This game seesawed back and forth, but in the second half, the Chelan Goats really stepped up their defensive pressure and emerged with a 49-32 victory.
The Newport Grizzlies came to Chelan to play football, chose to kickoff instead of receive after winning the toss, kicked an onside kick which they recovered and converted that possession to a touchdown in the first two minutes of play.
On their second kickoff, they did it again, got possession at the 45 yard line, ran a sweep to the 25 yard line and threatened Chelan once again. Chelan forced a fumble and Zane Sandum recovered the ball and ran it 75 yards for Chelan’s first touchdown. While Newport was unable to kick their point after, Chelan didn’t miss and the Goats were out front 7-6 without ever running an offensive play.
Chelan’s lead didn’t last long. Newport answered with another touchdown with to play in the first quarter, but missed on its two point conversion attempt. With the score now 12-7 in Newport’s favor, the game turned ugly for Chelan on its next possession when Newport forced a fumble and recovered it. A little over 30 seconds of game time later, Newport once again scored a touchdown to bring their lead to 18-7 after missing their point after attempt.
The game seesawed back and forth until quarterback Zane Sandum threw the long ball down the sideline to Brett Linehan for a 68 yard touchdown pass with only remaining in the first quarter. This brought Chelan back to within four points, 14-18.
In the second quarter of play, Derrick Talley broke free and ran approximately 80 yards to put Chelan ahead 21-18, but Newport was not going to go to the locker room at half time behind, They scored one more TD to end the first half ahead of Chelan 25-21.
It was in the second half that Chelan began to show the talent and strength everyone knew they had all year. “We played an excellent second half,” remarked a happy Coach Darrin Talley after the game. “We only had possession four times in the first half.”
Derrick Talley broke for a 60-yard run with remaining in the third quarter to take the Goats out front 28-25. Early in the fourth, the Grizzlies answered with a TD to take the lead again 32-28. Greg Schultz turned right around and romped for 50-yards to put Chelan back in the scoring position. Talley ran it in from the 15-yard line and Chelan was back in front, this time for good.
With remaining to play, Sandum connected with Linehan one more time on a 25-yard pass play to put Chelan comfortably in front after a two point conversion, 43-32.
Sandum then ran the ball in for Chelan’s last TD to finish off the Grizzlies 49-32.
With only remaining to play, Chelan pulled a Newport and kicked an onside ball which they recovered to finish the game.
Overall this was one exciting game for the fans, team and coaches. What a way to finish the football season off. Congratulations go to all the seniors who finished their high school football career on Friday night.
