Lady Goats win Chelan Basketball Tournament
By Richard Uhlhorn
In last weekend’s basketball tournament at ChelanHigh School, the Lady Goats prevailed over the visiting teams to win the overall championship. Each team played a two round-robin games for seeding into the final tournament. “Because there were seven teams, one team earned a bye into the second round of the tournament, and that was us,” reported Coach Robinson.
In game one, Chelan played Blaine (2A) and won that by a score of 38-17. “We followed up with a 47-25 win over Raymond, who came from the real coast,” said Robinson. ”Saturday evening we earned a bye with our two wins.”
The Goats ended up playing Raymond again on Sunday morning. “Our defense, which was solid on Saturday, picked it up a notch, thanks in larger part to the work of Kilee Lppincott,” said Robinson. “We held them to only 11 points, and with the help of Darby Jenkins, who had just flown in from Japan, we beat them 31-11, setting up a matchup with Blanchard (3A) out of Seattle. It was another defensive battle, and we came out on top 37-28 to win the tournament.”
Robinson said that the team’s defense is a little farther along than its offense, “and it showed.” He feels the team is going to be fun to watch and he expects the team to bring the same level of high intensity to every game. “The progress we’ve made since we began summer workouts was really exciting to see, and reflects the goal I set for the team when we started: get better every time you step on the floor.”
Raymond ended up beating Blaine for third place, so our four games were against the #2, #3, and #4 teams in the tournament.
The girls are playing a mini-doubleheader against Brewster and LakeRoosevelt at the Community Gym on Tuesday evening, June 24. “We play Brewster at , then Brewster and LR play at , followed by us and LR at . After that our summer workouts are essentially done, though we will be heading to team camp at Gonzaga from July 6-9.”
