Chelanís track and field team traveled to West Valley High School in Spokane on Saturday, May 17, to participate in the 2008 Regional tournament. The 8 teams from the Caribou Trail League were joined by 6 from the Northeast A League to compete for automatic berths to the Washington State Track and Field Tournament to be held Friday and Saturday, May 23, 24, at Mt. Tahoma High School in Tacoma. The top 4 finishers in each of the girlís events and top 3 of the boys would earn a berth in the tournament.
In the first event of the afternoon, sophomore Gaby Guillen earned her second consecutive trip to State with a 3rd place finish in the 3200 meter run. With temperatures reaching into the 90ís, Gaby battled the heat as well as the field of 12 for 8 laps with a time of 12 minutes 33 seconds. Shortly after that the Chelan girls 800 meter relay team earned a trip to State by placing 3rd in a come from behind performance.
Chelanís relay quartet, senior Katelyn Peer, juniors Darby Jenkins and Sydney Austin, and freshman Jaicee Harris, were especially relieved following the finish. Chelan came in to this showdown ranked in the top ten in State. Unfortunately, six of the top 8 teams in State also come from this region, and only the top 4 advance. When Chelanís anchor, Sydney Austin, received the baton Chelan was in 5th place. She managed to pass 2 runners to move Chelan into third with a seasonís best time of 1:47.65. The level of competition became apparent when it was revealed that the teams that finished in 5th and 6th had also earned a trip to State by besting the State Standard, a time or distance derived by averaging the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishes from the past 5 years in the State Meet.
The same group of girls would also qualify later in the day in the 400 meter relay by once again placing 3rd. Chelanís boys 400 meter relay team (seniors Sam Sydloski-Tesch, Brett Linehan, Luke Laughlin, and junior Derrick Talley) ran their best time of the year, 44.58, to finish 2nd , qualifying them for State.
Derrick Talley, who has been recovering from a mid-season hip flexor injury, qualified for State by placing 3rd in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.54 seconds. Sam Sydloski-Tesch probably had the wildest swing of emotions for the day. An official had told him that his long jump of 19í8H would place him in 4th, one quarter inch behind the 3rd place finisher. Only the top 3 make it to State. When he reported to the awards platform to receive his ribbon for 4th place they moved him up to 3rd when they found they had made a mistake in the earlier report.
By an equally narrow margin, after a wild head-to-head sprint in the last 100 meters, Sydney Austin was out leaned at the finish line of the 400 meter dash by Samantha Beamer of Chewelah. Sydneyís second place time of 60.20 seconds was only 9-hundredths of a second behind the winner.
Jaicee Harris also qualified for State with a javelin toss of 99í2Ē, good enough for 4th place.
On the day, 16 of the 18 competitors for the Goats equaled or improved season best performances and thirteen will be traveling to Tacoma to compete at State.
