Tyson McGuffin, last year’s State Tennis Champion, had two byes at the District Tournament in Cashmere on Saturday and then swept his opponent in the quarterfinal match 6-1, 6-0 to qualify for the semi-finals next Saturday, May 17. McGuffin has not lost a match all season and is a strong candidate to repeat his last year’s state championship. Tyson will be attending college on a tennis scholarship in Arizona after graduation.
Izzy Barth also had a first round bye at the District openers on Saturday and won her second round match 6-2, 6-0 to move on to the quarterfinal match against Taylor LaMoreauz of Brewster. She won this match 6-2, 6-4. “She played her best tennis of the year,” reported Coach Marty Rothlisbeger. “She avenged an earlier season loss to LaMoreaux and will play in the semifinals next Saturday against the number one seed, Leah Newell of Cascade.”
Carmel Easley and Kelli Lafferty also had a first round bye and won their second round match 6-0, 6-3, but lost their quarterfinal match 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. “They hope to work their way through the consolation bracket on Saturday and earn a third place finish,” said Rothlisberger.
“We've never had our full team play so well at the district tournament, however we've also never lost so many close matches in one day,” said Rothlisberger. “Many of our losses were against higher seeds, and our players played well. Every single one of our entries played a close, hard-fought match. It is typical for a team to experience a few blowouts in the early single-elimination rounds, but that was not the case for our team.”
