Chelan tennis will enter District’s this coming weekend
by Richard Uhlhorn
Chelan hosted the Tonasket Tigers on its last regularly scheduled tennis match held at Lake Chelan Shores. Coach Marty Rothlisberger introduced the 11 seniors who will be leaving the program this year prior to the match.
“Losing graduating seniors is always hard on a program,” said Rothlisberger. “However, this will be an especially tough group to lose based on talent and sheer numbers. We lose over 1/3 of our kids, including 4 out of 7 varsity boys and 3 out of 7 varsity girls. The good news is we have underclassmen who had great seasons, love playing tennis, and plan on working hard to improve over the next 9 months.”
The match on Thursday, May 1, had the largest gallery in Rothlisberger’s recent memory. The parents provided a wonderful barbeque for both teams and parents.
Senior Tyson McGuffin remained unbeaten on the season and hasn’t lost a league match since his freshman year, and top girl singles player Izzy Barth has found her stroke and is beginning win.
The District Tennis competition begins on Saturday, May 10 and continues on Tuesday, May 13 and finishes on Saturday, May 17. District’s will determine who will continue play at the Regional Tournament for qualification into the State Tournament.
