Roy Figueroa got a huge out at home plate after bobbling a bunt, but turning around, picking it up and getting it into home plate in time.
Chelan splits doubleheader with Brewster
By Richard Uhlhorn
The Chelan Goat baseball team will only lose one player to graduation this year. That player is standout pitcher, third baseman and .700 hitter Roy Figueroa. In Roy’s last game at home, he put in a strong performance on the mound, giving up six hits, but only one earned run. Figueroa struck out four and walked four to pick up the opening game win against Brewster 3-2.
This was an exciting baseball game with both Brewster and Chelan playing excellent defense and offense. By the bottom of the fourth inning, the Bears were out front 2-1, but in the bottom of the fifth with two outs, Figueroa hit a short Texas leaguer into the outfield for a single RBI, scoring Brooks Gatzmierer from third to tie the game up at 2-all.
On the mound in the sixth inning, Figueroa found himself in a two out jam. Brewster had the bases loaded and Figueroa got the out to keep the score tied. Brewster’s Eli Driessen pitched a 1-2-3 out sixth for Brewster giving Brewster one more chance to score in the top of the seventh. Chelan held them off and went into the bottom of the seventh looking for a way to win this game.
With the fans glued to their seats, and Chelan facing extra innings with two out and Greg Schultz on base, the Brewster coach walked .500 hitter Curtis Pusey to let Driessen face Figueroa. That turned out to be a big mistake. Figueroa slammed a double to drive in the winning run and Chelan took the game 3-2.
Offensively, Figueroa was 2 for 3; Greg Schultz, Curtis Pusey and Niles Des Marias were all 1 for 3; and Josh Burbury was 1 for 4.
Brewster prevailed big in the nightcap, picking up a 17-4 win over the Goats. Josh Burbery, coming off an injury, started on the mound, but couldn’t find the strike zone. Brooks Gatzemeier came in and finished the pitching for Chelan. Defensively, Chelan committed five errors in the nightcap.
Brewster’s Stockton Taylor pitched the entire game for Brewster collecting the win giving up seven hits and striking out seven.
Offensively, Chelan had seven hits with Greg Schultz, Greg Schultz, Roy Figueroa, Cyrus DesMarias and Josh Burbery all going 1 for 3 with Burberry hitting a two run homerun. Curtis Pusey was 1 for 2 and both Even Riester and Wesley Field were 1 for 1.
The Goats ended the regular season with an 8 - 6 league record (10 -10 overall). “We will have to sit back this week and see what the other teams do in their remaining league games,” said Coach Jim Burbery. Playoffs will be determined based on how the other teams do this week.
