Chelan’s golf program has 22 high school kids out. “It should be an exciting year for us,” stated Coach Jim Oscarson. Chelan has two defending 1A State Champions to lead the pack in Dane DeQuillettes and Kelli Bowers. In addition to these two talented golfers, Cam Reister, who finished 13th at last year’s State tournament and Danny Campbell, who just missed the second round of the State tournament by one stroke are back.

Coach Oscarson also mentioned that on the boys side, Johnny Griffith and Jonathon Peck are also capable of qualifying for the State tournament this year. Ross Young, who made it into the Regional tournament last year has made it his goal to make the State tournament also.

“We have a strong core unit,” said Oscarson. The boys team won the league title and district title last year and are looking forward to meeting that goal again.

On the girls side, Sophomore Kelli Bowers, last year’s State 1A Champion, is back. The girls team is bolstered by Katie McQuaid, who also made it into the Regional tournament last year along with Michelle Munneke and Daneijha Weigel. “All three of these girls have the potential to be at the State tournament this year,” said Oscarson.

Last year marked the only the third time that the same high school had two State Champions in the same year. “If we do it again this year, it will be a first,” said Oscarson.

On Tuesday, March 25, the boys hosted the Ephrata Tigers golf team and ended up with a win. Dane deQuilettes shot a 37 in the front nine followed by Danny Campbell with a 38. “Dane was Tuesday’s medalist, but Danny Campbell had the lowest score he ever shot with a 2 over par 38. He bogeyed the first three holes to get him going,” said Oscarson.

Cam Reister shot a 46 on the afternoon and Jonathan Peck shot a 49 to round out the varsity score of 170 over Ephrata’s 173 strokes as a team Ephrata’s Austin Key shot a 40 followed by Cameron Allen with a 43 and Steven Lund and Chase Millard who both had a 45 for the eight holes.
