Chelan baseball – week of March 17-22

By Richard Uhlhorn

The Chelan Baseball Team hosted the Pateros Billy Goats on Thursday, March 20, and ended up losing that game 6-5.

The game did give Chelan’s Coach Jim Burbery a chance to give his pitching staff some time on the mound during a live game. Cyrus DesMarias pitched the first three innings giving up one run on four hits. He struck out four batters and walked one. He was followed to the mound by Brooks Gatzemeier who pitched two innings, facing nine batters and giving up three runs on one hit. He struck out three and walked one.

Alex Brown pitched one inning. “This was Alex’s first outing on the mound this season,” said Burbery. Brown is recovering from a shoulder injury. He gave up one hit and allowed one run while walking three batters. Josh Burbery also pitched one inning giving up no hits but walked two batters. The Billy Goats scored one run off a controversial balk call that almost got Coach Burbery thrown out of the game.

Chelan’s offense scored fives off of four hits.  “Pateros’ ace, Richardson, went all 7 innings,” reported Burbery

Offensively, Wesley Field was 1 for 2 with a double; Greg Schultz 1 for 1; Roy Figueroa 1 for 1; Derek Brunner 1 for 1.  “Since this was a non-league game, all players from the 18-man roster saw some playing time,” said Burbery.

On Saturday, March 22, Chelan traveled to Okanogan for a doubleheader against the Bulldogs and lost both games 6-5 and 7-4.

In the opener, Roy Figueroa pitched all six innings for Chelan, with Cyrus DesMarias behind the plate.  Roy gave up eight hits and struck out six Okanogan batters.

Chelan had only one error in game one. Chelan’s line-up produced six hits including a great offensive effort by Curtis Pusey who slammed a home run and a triple.  Greg Schultz, Roy Figueroa, Josh Burbery and Brooks Gatzemeier each had a single.

In the nightcap, Josh Burbery went the distance for Chelan, striking out seven, giving up seven hits, but allowing only two earned runs. Evan Reister and Adam Hendricks shared duty behind plate.

Okanogan was able to capitalize on some errors and mental mistakes made by Chelan’s defense in the bottom of the first inning, and although the Goats had a solid performance the remainder of the game, they were just not able dig themselves out of that hole.

Chelan’s offense had 4 hits in game two, and the Goats stole an impressive nine bases in this game, including three by Greg Schultz and two each by Roy Figueroa and Josh Burbery.

Chelan played Tonasket on Tuesday, March 25, but the results haven’t been posted yet. The next home game is this coming Saturday, March 29 against Brewster, beginning at 11 a.m.
