Chelan Goats lose to Lakeside in close game
Forced into a must win situation against Brewster on Saturday
By Richard Uhlhorn
The Chelan Goats let an eight point lead slip in the fourth quarter of play against the Lakeside Eagles to lose a close, exciting game of basketball 57-54. The Goats will have to come back on Saturday in a loser out game against the Brewster Bears to make it to the State Tournament in Yakima next week.
Tonight (Friday, February 22) Chelan played some excellent basketball with Joe Harris leading the scoring with 18 points followed by Brett Linehan with 14 and Derrick Talley with 10 points. Danny Zavala, who hasnít seen all that much action this season came off the bench and ended up with a credible 12 point2.
At the end of the third quarter, Chelan was in the lead 42-36, but the Eagles tied the game up with remaining. Chelan went ahead 52-51 with remaining. The Eagles ended up with a one point lead with only 37 seconds remaining. Chelan turned the ball over under pressure and Linehan fouled Lakeside who missed the front end shot from the free throw line. Engstrom came down with the ball and attempted a pass to Linehan which went out of bounds, handing the ball back to Lakeside.
Lakeside was fouled again by Julio Juarez and Lakeside made the front end of the bonus but missed the back end to take the score to 55-53. Linehan rebounded the ball and got it off to Harris who passed it to Zavala who was fouled and had a chance to tie the game at 55. Zavala hit the front end to make it a one point game and then Lakeside called a time out. After the timeout, Zavala missed the back end and with the clock winding down and the score 55-54, Harris fouled out in an attempt to get the ball back, but Lakesideís Pettit put both free throws through the hoop to give Lakeside a three point lead with 1.4 seconds remaining, and that was it.
In a telephone conversation with Dennis Rahm after the game, he said, ďI donít like to bash officials but our guys got beat up all night long. I had heard that they let the guys play physical in this league. There were some questionable calls from my perspective
