With the exception of 25 turnovers, it was a good night for the Lady Goats as they defeated the Okanogan Bulldogs in their District opener 53 to 42.
Okanogan forced many turnovers in the first half to keep this game close and Chelan was only leading by five at the end of the first quarter. Okanogan came back in the second quarter with a small run to pull within one point before Chelan pulled back out to a 22-16 lead with remaining until the break.
At the end of the first half, Kelly Downey who ended up with 22 points on the evening, hit a half court shot with less then a second to go to pull the Lady Bulldogs to within one point again, 26-25.
The Lady Goats made some adjustments and in the third quarter of play went on a 10-4 run to take the lead which they never gave up. In the fourth they continued to shoot better than Okanogan, outscoring them 17-13 to win the game.
Sidney Austin led the scoring for the Goats with 15, but other players stepped up also. Kim Harter was tough underneath the basket, scoring 10 points and pulling down six rebounds. Alisha Love hit eight points, had eight rebounds and four steals and Kristen Milliette, who has been starting all year, came off the bench and had a great game with seven points and five rebounds. Izzy Barth had four points and five rebounds. Kelli Bowers pumped in an additional five points with four rebounds and led the team with three assists, but turned the ball over seven times to the scrappy Okanogan girls. Off the bench Taylor McClellan only had two points, but continued to be a force under the basket with four blocks and one steal.
Okanogan didnít shoot well from the floor hitting only 15-53 attempts for 28 percent while Chelan was 34 percent with 20 of 59 attempts.
Chelan will play Brewster on Saturday night. Brewster beat Cashmere 52-35 for the right to play the Lady Goats for the District Championship.
