Chelan survives tough outing against Omak

By Richard Uhlhorn

“This game was a good indication of what it is going to be like in Districts and Regionals,” stated Coach Joe Harris after Chelan’s 74-61 victory over the Omak Pioneers last Friday night, January 25.

Until the later parts of this game, it was up for grabs. Omak came out in the first quarter with a full court press and continued to press Chelan for all four quarters of play. Their quickness and ability to get the ball into the bucket pushed the Goats hard much to the fans delight.

Chelan turned the ball over 29 times and while they outscored Omak in every quarter but the third, this game was close. “Our guys found some inner strength and used perseverance to stay out front,” said Coach Harris.

In the first quarter of play, Chelan and Omak played well against each other with Chelan ending up on top at the buzzer 14-12. The second quarter had Chelan making a small run on the Pioneers which put them in the locker room at half time ahead by five points, 36-31.

In the third quarter, Omak was able to tie the game twice, 47-all and then 50-all. Talley came off the bench and scored the next two field goals to put Chelan ahead 54-50 at the buzzer.

The fourth quarter had Chelan making a run on Omak to take control of the game and by the end had a solid victory 74-61. “Derrick definitely went out and disrupted some of Omak’s play,” said Harris.

Joe Harris led the team with 22 points, but three other players were in double figures including Cam Reister with 11, Derrick Talley – 14, and Brett Linehan with 10 points. Mat Engstrom and Linehan both had eight rebounds and Zane Sandum pulled down seven while scoring eight points before fouling out at the end of the game.

The win keeps Chelan in a 9-1 league tie with Lake Roosevelt. The two teams will meet up again on Chelan’s home court Friday February 8. “That will be a barnburner,” said one Chelan fan. “It will be the game to come see.”

This coming week, Chelan is back on the road against Cascade on Tuesday and Okanogan on Friday.
