Chelan wins big over Cashmere
By Richard Uhlhorn
It was RETRO night at the Community Gym and the Chelan Goats were dressed out in old uniforms that were certainly not that flattering to the white legs that hadn’t seen the sun for ages, but RETRO night has a purpose, which is to raise scholarship money in memory of Tricia Haerling and Lorita Beeson.
It was also an evening for the School Bond Committee and School Board members to do a little smoozing with the basketball fans from Chelan and Cashmere. They did it out in the cold by the entrance, giving away free hotdogs all night long and encouraging people to vote YES on the upcoming February 9 election.
Inside, the old Community Gymnasium was rocking with some serious basketball. Cashmere was on hand to battle the Goats with the Goats prevailing 79-66.
The first quarter saw both teams trading points and playing some great basketball with Chelan coming out on top by a mere one point to end the period ahead 16-15.
In the second quarter, Chelan went on a 25-16 run to take the halftime lead 41-31. It was a lead that Cashmere could never recover from. Chelan outscored the Bulldogs in both the third and fourth quarters 16-14 and 22-21 respectively.
Joe Harris continued his dominance of the game, scoring 28 points, dishing out four assists, one block and five steals before fouling out. He was followed by Brett Linehan and Cam Reister, both who found basket, scoring 16 and 13 respectively. It was nice to see Reister getting to the basket again instead of relying on his three point shot which is still a major factor in Chelan’s game.
Zane Sandum fouled out also and had a terrible game against Cashmere, scoring only two points and pulling down two rebounds. Mat Engstrom was a workhorse under the basket, pulling down eight rebounds and pumping in 12 points, eight of which came from the field and four from the free throw line.
Cashmere actually forced more turnovers than Chelan, coming up with the ball 24 times to Chelan’s 18 forced turnovers.
The big difference in this game came when Chelan outscored Cashmere 25-16 in the second quarter to walk away with a 13 point lead at the final buzzer. This puts Chelan one game behind LakeRoosevelt with a league record of 8-1.
Chelan’s last home game after Omak will be a showdown with the Lake Roosevelt Raiders on February 8.
Tonight, Friday, January 25, the Goats take on the Omak Pioneers with boys’ action beginning around
