Probably the most exciting match of Tuesday evening’s non-league wrestling match against Liberty Bell was Tyson McGuffin’s defeat of Kjell Johnson in the 160 pound classification. “He was second at the State Tournament last year,” said Coach Jay McGuffin. Kjell was a 135 pounder as a sophomore, but McGuffin didn’t wrestle last year.
It was a major battle between the two wrestlers that had round one ending 0-0. It wasn’t until the second round that McGuffin scored a point on an escape and then scored again on a takedown to take the lead 3-0. Kjell scored a point on an escape and the second two minute round ended with McGuffin leading 3-1. The match continued to be a battle, but McGuffin turned Kjell in the third to claim victory by fall.
Also scoring by falls were Gage Schmidt (140 lbs.) defeating Luis Perez in of the first round and Sean Gervais (215 lbs.) pinning Riley Fink in the first round.
Losing by fall were freshman Memo Venegas (135 lbs.) in the second round of his match against junior Ray Tannelhill and Tyler Clark (152 lbs.) in the second round of his match to Marc Jefferson. Freshman Adelberth Guillen battled Colton Skelton in the 103 pound match to the end of the second round when it was called for 20-3 technical fall.
Jesse Allen (189 lbs.) faced off with Liberty Bell’s Dakota Ochoa (171 lbs.). This turned out to be another great match with Allen winning by fall in the third round.
Liberty Bell gave up forfeits in the 112, 119, 125, 130 and 145 pound classifications. Chelan gave up a forfeit in the 275 pound classification.
“This was a nice preparation for Cashmere this coming Thursday,” said Coach McGuffin. “It’s great to have the kids get mat time.”
McGuffin feels his team is in better shape then ever. “We are doing all the right things… the kids are excited and pumped.”
Cashmere’s match is in Cashmere and it is an important league matchup for Chelan. Cashmere is always tough, but Chelan is proving to be tough also.
This will be the last match for the Chelan wrestlers until after the Christmas break.
