Chelan Goats squeak by Brewster 43-41

By Richard Uhlhorn

After forging a 10 point lead over the Brewster Bears before half-time, the Chelan Goats barely squeaked by a persistent Bear team on Tuesday, January 15. The 43-41 win over Brewster put Chelan solidly in second place in the Caribou Trail League.

Chelan came out in the first quarter and went on a 7-4 run over the Bears and ended up the quarter ahead 11-4. They also outscored Brewster in the second quarter 16-13 with Derrick Talley scoring on several fast breaks.

With 3:36 to play in the second period and Chelan leading by 10 points, Coach Harris called a timeout. The Goats maintained that 10 point lead all the way to the break. It seemed that with each three point shot Brewster made, Cam Reister would strike back with a three point bucket of his own. The first half ended with Chelan out front 27-17.

Brewster adjusted in the third quarter and began their comeback, outscoring Chelan 18-6 and tying the game up at 29-all with 3:58 left to play in the third. Reister hit a lay-in and took Chelan back into the lead, but Brewster ended up owning the lead at the buzzer 35-33.

Brett Linehan had a number of excellent looks at the basket, but the ball had different eyes and just wouldnít fall, leaving Linehan with a uncharacteristic two points for the entire game. Talley finally tied the game back up with 4:30 to play in the final quarter and Brewster took a timeout with the score at 40-all with 2L53 remaining.

Chelan was leading 42-41 with 56 second left and Brewster took another timeout. With play ready to resume and Chelan getting ready to bring the ball in, Coach Harris didnít like what he was seeing and called timeout himself. When the ball was put back into play, Joe Harris was fouled, making the first of two free throws, but missing the second, putting Chelan in front by only two points with 40 seconds remaining in the game.

Mat Engstrom fouled a Brewster player, and fortunately, that player missed his attempt. Brewster fouled Reister and he missed his attempt and with 5.4 seconds remaining in the game, Brewster called a timeout, but it was for naught and Chelan came away with a 43-41 victory.

Joe Harris had a terrible game, scoring only 13 points. GoLakeChelan announcer Dennis Rahm stated that it looked as though the team, as a whole, had tired legs. They certainly missed the steady play of Zane Sandum, who was out for an injury, but expects to be back by Saturdayís game against Tonasket.

Game time will be around 7:30 p.m. in the Chelan High School gymnasium.
